Welcome

Welcome

On behalf of the members of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Provincial Grand Stewards Lodge it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to our website, and I hope you find it informative.

The Lodge was consecrated on 30th November 1987 by Right Worshipful Brother James Bullen, the Provincial Grand Master, who installed the Founding Master, Right Worshipful Brother Michael Wilks. Indeed, it is the tradition in our Province that the Provincial Grand Master installs the Worshipful Master of our Lodge.

Our purpose within Freemasonry is to serve and support our Provincial Grand Master and the Province as required, especially at the Annual General Meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge. You will likewise find our members assisting in other key events such as the Consecration of new Lodges. It is also our remit to ensure and maintain the highest standards of bearing and to deliver lectures to Lodges across the Province when invited.

Membership of the Lodge is offered to all Brethren appointed as a Provincial Grand Steward in the Province of Hampshire and Isle of Wight. Also, joining membership may be offered to those Past Provincial Grand Stewards who have served in other Provinces and have moved into our Province.

The Lodge meets three times per year. Our new Master is Installed in November, we conduct a Raising Ceremony on behalf of another Lodge in March, and the current Lodge Stewards deliver a Lecture in July. All Past Provincial Grand Stewards wear their red aprons at our meetings irrespective of other ranks and honours conferred.

Our History

Our History

On 2nd July 1986, W.Bro. James Edward Bullen was installed as Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master for the Masonic Province of Hampshire and Isle of Wight at Southampton Guildhall. An experienced and well respected Freemason, R.W. Bro. Bullen’s knowledge of the Province was unsurpassed and his influence was considerable. He had decided, prior to his installation, that the Province would benefit from having a Provincial Grand Stewards Lodge on its roll of lodges, and one of his first tasks as PGM was to request the Assistant PGM, W.Bro. R J McGarel-Groves, to make contact with other Provinces which had Provincial Grand Stewards Lodges, and to obtain such information as was available to assist him in deciding upon the format of the Provincial Grand Stewards Lodge, which he had decided would be consecrated within his Province.

Freemasonry

Freemasonry

Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest secular fraternal societies. The following information is intended to explain Freemasonry as it is practised under the United Grand Lodge of England, which administers Lodges of Freemasons in England, Wales and in many places overseas.

Charity

Charity

Whilst charitable fundraising is a key component of Freemasonry, no Freemason is asked to give any amount beyond his means so that his home and family life are not adversely affected.

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Provincial Grand Stewards Lodge has a proud tradition of holding several events to raise funds for charity and is also key to the support of all Provincial Festivals. In the last Festival held in 2016 supporting the Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys, our Lodge raised more than £250,000 towards our Province’s total of £7,700,000. For this the Lodge was presented with a Festival Gavel by the Provincial Grand Master.

The Lodge also donates to non-Masonic charities, most recently donating £2,565 to the Wetwheels Foundation which provides opportunities for all disabled people to safely experience the sea on boats.

Lecture Teams

Lecture Teams

The Lodge has, since 1988, been presenting an interesting series of Masonic Lectures, compiled by Masters of the Lodge. These Lectures were originally worked within the Lodge but in order to widen Masonic learning and to support our Provincial Grand Master’s nominated charity, we are very pleased to offer them, on request, to any Lodge.
